Blue Owl plants a Zurich flag for European private wealth

The firm's new Swiss base, led by a Schroders veteran, targets private banks and wealth managers as the private-credit distribution race crosses the Atlantic.

Blue Owl has put a permanent local face on its push into European private wealth distribution with its first dedicated Zurich office, led by Philippe Benedetti, who joined as managing director, private wealth Switzerland from Schroders, where he covered intermediary and institutional clients in the Swiss market from 2021. The firm said the base is meant to deepen engagement with financial intermediaries, including private banks and wealth managers.

The Zurich base is Blue Owl's eighth office in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and its twenty-fourth globally, and co-chief executives Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz framed it as central to the firm's European growth. Blue Owl manages $319bn across credit, real assets, and GP strategic capital platforms, and its Private Wealth platform counts more than 175,000 clients.

Benedetti's private-wealth title and the firm's talk of intermediaries rather than direct pension relationships cast the office as a distribution hub for wealth-channel assets, not a European lending origination desk. For direct lenders, the relevant clients are the discretionary portfolios of Swiss private banks, a pool separate from the region's institutional limited partners.

Private credit's push into the defined-contribution channel has so far been an American story, with retirement platforms opening up to major managers. Zurich signals the next chapter may run through European private banks, where shelf space for private-market funds is thinner but the pool of wealthy capital is deep. A dedicated office with a named private-wealth lead is a bet that those banks will move allocations, and that the manager with local presence gets first call.

Swiss intermediaries still have to buy the product at scale, especially after the redemption pressures that have shadowed some private-credit funds. For Blue Owl, the economics of a single office are small; the strategic stake is larger. Rival private-credit platforms now have to decide whether to answer with Zurich or Geneva desks of their own.
