KKR hires BofA, JPMorgan bankers for European credit

A former EMEA debt capital markets head and a JPMorgan M&A dealmaker join KKR as CLO resets make funding cheaper and sourcing assets the harder problem.

KKR has hired Bank of America's former head of EMEA corporate debt capital markets and a managing director from JPMorgan's M&A group into its global credit and markets ranks in Europe, Creditflux reported on September 2. The hires read as an investment in origination rather than portfolio management: an EMEA DCM head sits where a borrower chooses between public bonds, leveraged loans, and private money, while an M&A banker sits one step further upstream, on the transactions that create future financing needs.

The firm's recent activity gives those hires context, because KKR has been part of the CLO reset wave that has become a fixture in private credit funding. KKR and Sculptor brought seasoned European CLOs back to market this summer, resetting Avoca XXI and Sculptor CLO VI through Citi and JPMorgan, and KKR was one of four managers in an August wave that priced nearly $2bn of US CLO resets. Resets cut funding costs on existing collateral, but they do not by themselves create the loans that go into the next vehicle.

The strategic point, then, is buying relationships, since the reset wave has made the funding side of a credit book cheaper and more mechanical while the hard part is sourcing assets. A former EMEA DCM head carries relationships built where issuance decisions are made, and a JPMorgan M&A managing director has a seat on the deal calendar; in direct lending, that access is closer to raw material than headcount.

None of this moves a spread today, and personnel announcements are not mandates, but the pattern is consistent: large credit managers are hiring senior bankers to originate instead of waiting for banks to distribute paper. CLO resets have solved part of KKR's cost problem, so the firm is spending on what remains. The next European deal announcements will show whether that bet pays off in KKR's name on the term sheet rather than the staff list.
