Fortress bets two hires on Japan and EMEA savings shift

The $55bn manager is wagering that reform will push household cash off the sidelines in two markets where deposits still dominate.

Fortress Investment Group is betting that savings reforms in Japan and EMEA will push household cash into private markets, and it has named Yuko Umino and Harry Bush to lead the effort from Tokyo and London, distributing its credit, real estate and net lease products. The $55bn manager said the pair will report to global co-heads Adam Bobker and Nils Wilson, extending a push that had been focused on the US and Latin America.

Wilson tied the move to savings behavior: “As reforms and innovation are beginning to spur changes in how individuals invest their savings in Europe and Japan, we believe that now is a strong entry point for our business in these markets.” The firm’s own figures argue the case: cash and deposits account for about half of household wealth in Japan, about 40% in Europe, and less than 10% in the US, leaving the two regions with far more room to rotate cash into alternatives than the American market where Fortress already operates.

The manager picked local operators for the build-out. Umino, based in Tokyo, joined Fortress in March from PIMCO Japan, where she was a senior vice president in the Japan Global Wealth Management team; Bush, based in London, arrives from Nuveen, where he was head of EMEA Strategic Accounts. That Umino had six months inside Fortress before the public announcement suggests the Japan plan has been in motion longer than the rollout, while Bush’s strategic-accounts background points to a distribution role built around intermediaries and platforms rather than direct-to-client sales.

Neither hire is a traditional fund-raiser. The profiles point to a distribution strategy that runs through platforms and private banks, the standard playbook for entering a market where local relationships decide product placement.

The expansion gives Fortress named on-the-ground coverage in two of the world’s deepest savings pools, and the product pipeline behind Umino and Bush in the coming quarters will determine whether that positioning pays.
